Abstract

The goal of this article is to describe how to identify, evaluate and treat a child with childhood apraxia of speech. Childhood apraxia of speech is characterised by difficulty in motor planning and programming speech movements. This difficulty results in speech sound errors and differences in prosody. We will explore indicators of childhood apraxia of speech. We will also describe treatment approaches that combine motor and linguistic goals. These treatment approaches are based on motor learning theory proposed by Schmidt (1993), integral stimulation proposed by Caruso and Strand (1999) and the hierarchical approach proposed by Velleman (2003, 2006).
